Building Consensus for Fair and Sustainable Development

The G20 brings together 19 of the world’s most important industrialized and emerging economies, plus the European Union, to discuss important global trends. The scope of the G20 agenda has broadened since its creation in 1999 to include broader topics, such as sustainable development, agriculture, trade, energy, climate change, gender equality and migration, as well as the core issues of macroeconomic coordination and financial stability. Under this year’s Argentina G20 presidency, the agenda will focus on are infrastructure and development and a sustainable food future.

The G20 also seeks by engaging with civil society groups from the G20 nations; these engagement groups include the Business (B20), Civil Society (C20), Labor (L20), Science (S20), Think Tanks (T20), Women (W20) and Youth (Y20). Under this year’s Argentina presidency, the Think 20 (T20) is being coordinated by two local institutions, CARI and CIPPEC, in order to develop policy recommendations covering issues related to food security, infrastructure, gender, migration, climate change, SDG’s agenda, cooperation with Africa, trade and investment.

T20 Task Force 3 on Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture workshop at IFPRI

In support of the T20 Task Force 3 on ‘Food security and sustainable agriculture’, International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) will hold a workshop in collaboration with Consejo Argentino para las Relaciones Internacionales (CARI), Centro de Implementación de Políticas Públicas para la Equidad y el Crecimiento (CIPPEC), and Grupo de Paises Productores del Sur (GPS) on April 5th and 6th to analyze and contribute to the final content of a series of seven Task Force 3 policy briefs. Each brief will address a specific challenge and present proposals for action to the G20 members.

At the workshop, authors of the briefs will present the main elements of their research and proposals and engage in a dialogue with workshop participants. In addition to these main topics, the workshop will also address the overarching topic of agricultural productivity. The workshop will convene members of the T20 Task Force 3 with global experts and select policymakers to engage in a global dialogue on these issues.

Following the event, co-chairs of the T-20 Task Force 3 will create final versions of the policy briefs to be presented to the G20 presidency at the T20 Summit in September 2018 in Buenos Aires.
