“Even in normal times, we see crackdowns on informal traders are way too common in African cities. And so to respond effectively to public health emergencies such as COVID-19, it is critical for municipal and national governments to really see traders as fundamental partners in the food system, rather than just a nuisance to be tolerated in an ad-hoc manner.”

“Crises and pandemics are not new and it’s not surprising that when large scale crises happen, they tend to affect the already vulnerable and make it worse for them.” Developing gender-sensitive policies is complex and there is no one-size-fits all approach…context matters, because gender is a very context-specific thing.

“The food system is largely made up of the private sector and policy plays a role by influencing the incentives that the private sector then responds to for the most part…Focusing on the businesses that actually supply nutritious foods to people living in more marginal circumstances is key.”

“Lo que hagamos como sociedades y gobiernos en ALC va a tener consecuencias enormes para los habitantes de la región, especialmente los más pobres, marginados y vulnerables, con quienes tenemos una gran deuda pendiente, pero también va a tener externalidades fundamentales para el resto del mundo, en términos de seguridad alimentaria, sostenibilidad ambiental, migraciones, y paz y democracia.”

“What we do as societies and governments in LAC will have enormous consequences for the inhabitants of the region, especially the poorest, marginalized and vulnerable, with whom we have a great outstanding debt. But it will also have fundamental externalities for the rest of the world, in terms of food security, environmental sustainability, migration, and peace and democracy.”
