Kalyani Raghunathan

Kalyani Raghunathan is Research Fellow in the Poverty, Gender, and Inclusion Unit, based in New Delhi, India. Her research lies at the intersection of agriculture, gender, social protection, and public health and nutrition, with a specific focus on South Asia and Africa.

Pre-Summit of the UN Food Systems Summit

IFPRI is participating in several sessions of the Pre-Summit of the UN Food Systems Summit, which will set the stage for the culminating global event in September by bringing together diverse actors from around the world to leverage the power of food systems to deliver progress on all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Demand, Innovate and Scale: Partnership and Research to Deliver the 2030 Agenda (July 26, 2021- 12:30 PM to 1:20 PM (EDT)

This session will highlight the role of Research and Innovation (R&I) in achieving sustainable and resilient food systems. A keynote speaker will set the stage, highlighting the current state of agricultural research and how it can help transform food systems, from production to consumption. A moderated discussion will bring together representatives from different stages of research delivery: demand, innovation, and scaling. They will explore the R&I priorities across different countries, regions and sectors, present actionable solutions to food systems challenges, and discuss opportunities for upscaling existing initiatives to achieve better nutrition for all, within planetary boundaries.

Addressing Food Systems Hidden Costs as a Roadmap for Transformation (July 26, 2021 – 1:30PM to 2:20 PM (EDT)Register

This session will explore how policies and interventions can raise awareness of and address the hidden environmental, health, and other costs of food systems. The discussion will present various approaches, including fiscal measures, accountability measures for the private sector, and approaches that improve producers and consumers’ awareness and agency. The challenges and opportunities offered by these different approaches will be discussed from a political economy perspective.

Bold Actions for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Food Systems (July 27, 2021 3:00 AM to 3:50 AM (EDT

This session will present and discuss priority investments for achieving gender equality in food systems. It will bring together leaders to commit to bold actions for addressing gender equality and supporting women’s empowerment across food systems. This will help consolidate a multi-stakeholder coalition of actors to lead actions around gender equality and food systems. It will present commitments from Member States and other stakeholders to help mobilize more resources, initiatives and action to achieve gender equality and empower women in food systems.

Tackling a real problem with proven solutions: How gender transformative approaches are key for just and sustainable food (July 27, 2021 7:30 AM to 8:20 AM EDT| Information

There is extensive and compelling evidence that gender-transformative approaches contribute to improved food security, nutrition, equity, and other outcomes, including the reduction of violence and it is imperative that these issues are examined as core to the summit process. Impacts such as improved food security, incomes and access to assets and services; improvements in ecosystem and human health; and accelerated poverty alleviation and GDP growth are other social, environmental, and economic benefits associated with closing the gender gap. This session will focus on some of the solutions proposed to close this gap.

Stand up for Women: Women’s Nutrition, Economic Empowerment and Leadership in Food Systems Cluster (July 27, 2021 1:30 PM to 2:20 PM EDT | Information)

Join this discussion to learn how we can build women leaders in food systems, empower women as food entrepreneurs, and initiate a country-driven anemia alliance. The session will foster buy in for this combined approach & recruit country stakeholders to participate in the Cluster.

 Accelerating Progress towards Good Food for All: Exploring a New Consensus for Smallholder Farmers  (July 28, 2021 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM EDT | Information)

This affiliated session will explore the idea of a call to action for a new consensus for smallholder farmers that could contribute to and build on the momentum of these global summits, align policy priorities, drive decision-making and investment, especially as we “build back better” from COVID-19, and support greater coordinated collaboration during this Decade of Action to deliver the Global Goals by 2030.
