IFPRI Director General, Dr Shenggen Fan, joins a Global Panel

February 14, 2019

London: Sir John Beddington, Former UK Chief Scientific Advisor, and H.E John A. Kufuor, Former President of Ghana, in their role of Co-Chairs of the Global Panel on Agriculture and Food Systems for Nutrition, are pleased to welcome Dr Shenggen Fan as new Panel Member.

“The Global Panel commends Dr Shenggen Fan for his outstanding commitment to and leadership in agriculture, food security and nutrition”, remarks Sir John Beddington, Global Panel Co-Chair, who continues: “He will be a great addition to the Panel and its efforts to mobilise leadership to deliver safe and affordable healthy diets for all.”

Shenggen Fan is Director General of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and one of the Champions of the SDG Target 12.3, dedicated to accelerating progress toward cutting global food loss and waste. He serves as a member of the Lead Group for the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement, and also serves as advisor to many national governments (including China and Vietnam) on agriculture, food security and nutrition.

Upon his appointment, Dr Fan commented: “Working towards improving nutrition offers the opportunity to transform agriculture, promote economic growth, and to improve human capital. I am delighted to join a Panel of likeminded and highly committed nutrition champions.”

Global Panel Members met in Rome in November 2018 to agree an ambitious programme of activities for 2019. The Panel strongly supported Dr Fan’s nomination and look forward to continuing to provide policy leaders with the tools and knowledge needed to incorporate food systems and healthy diets into their policy planning – enabling healthier, higher quality diets for all.
