Head Topics (Colombia) published an article on how a healthy diet—more vegetables, fruit and legumes, and less meat is a simple way to sustainably feed the planet’s population, but for millions of people who depend on livestock, it isn’t so easy. Livestock enables a way of life for millions of farmworkers, herders, and smallholders with limited access to land. In the study, Ceres2030 (a study from IFPRI, IISD, and Cornell University), the authors highlight the connection between farming, livestock, and livelihoods. Senior Research Fellow David Laborde said, “In the next decade, economic growth will help reduce poverty and hunger around the world, but it will not be enough, especially for farmers.” If nothing is done to stop it, FAO predicts that the extremely hungry population will grow to 840 million in the next decade.
