How Russia made the world more food insecure (Inkstick)

April 22, 2022

Inkstick published an article stating that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has not only created global food insecurity but is also damaging the environment. A study by IFPRI found the rising demand for biofuels to be one of the main drivers contributing to the 2008 food crisis by causing the demand for grain and vegetable oil to increase. (See the 2008 IFPRI blog post, Biofuels and grain prices: impacts and policy responses). Rising demand for biofuels can also create significant implications for the environment by causing demand to rise for arable land, which can lead to the degradation of forests and other carbon sinks.
