The Times Group (Malawi) in an article on the push toward the use of organic fertilizer in the country, mentions that the International Food Policy Research Institute says food security in Malawi is generally equated with adequate maize production, a crop that accounts for more than 60 percent of total food production.
Maize consumption in the country is said to average 129 kg per year. The right fertilizer can produce much better results. “Organic fertilizer is the cheapest as anyone can easily make it. The ministry and its partners have been training people on how to make this fertilizer for the past year. Over 100,000 farmers have been trained across the country and we are still training more. Our goal is to have many companies manufacturing organic fertilizer in Malawi,” Banda said.
