Kalyani Raghunathan is Research Fellow in the Poverty, Gender, and Inclusion Unit, based in New Delhi, India. Her research lies at the intersection of agriculture, gender, social protection, and public health and nutrition, with a specific focus on South Asia and Africa.

Dramatic Rise in Poverty and Food Insecurity: Rob Vos, David Laborde, and Will Martin estimate the impact of the pandemic globally, finding that over 140 million additional people could fall into extreme poverty in 2020, with an accompanying spike in food insecurity. Devastating Impacts on Poverty
Rob Vos, David Laborde, and Will Martin illustrate the potentially catastrophic impact of the global pandemic on poverty, in the absence of national social and economic mitigation measures such as fiscal stimuli and expansion of social safety nets.The world would see a 20% global increase in extreme poverty with urban and rural populations in Africa south of the Sahara bearing the brunt, as 80 million more people become poor, a 23%  increase. The number of poor in South Asia would increase by 15% or 42 million. (Read Blog)
