Agnes Quisumbing

Agnes Quisumbing is a Senior Research Fellow in the Poverty, Gender, and Inclusion Unit. She co-leads a research program that examines how closing the gap between men’s and women’s ownership and control of assets may lead to better development outcomes.

2018 Award Winners

We congratulate the following recent IFPRI award recipients:

Alemayehu Seyoum Taffesse has been selected as a Fellow of the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences. The Ethiopian Academy of Sciences strives to foster scientific culture and innovation, and advance the knowledge of the sciences, arts, and indigenous knowledge to achieve a sustainable quality of life for all Ethiopians. Seyoum Taffesse is a senior research fellow in the division of Development Strategy and Governance.

Marie Ruel, Director of the Poverty, Health, and Nutrition division was recognized in the 90th-anniversary collection of The Journal of Nutrition, this article was among the most highly cited & was selected by the editors as representative of the field of nutrition. Ruel is the division director of Poverty Health and Nutrition.

Yanyan Liu, a senior research fellow is one of the five winners of the 2017 Inspire Challenge for her project, “Use CML to estimate rainfalls for agriculture” at the CGIAR Platform for Big Data in Agriculture Convention, in Nairobi, Kenya. The CGIAR Inspire Challenge aims to support leading edge, data-driven partnerships that push the limits of the possible in food security. Liu is a senior research fellow in the Markets, Trade, and Institutions Division. Carlo Azzarri (senior research fellow, EPTD) and Simla Tokgoz (research fellow, MTID) were also finalists for the award.

 

 

Berber Kramer, Francisco Ceballos, and Samyuktha Kannan were awarded the Scaling-up Award for their project “Seeing is believing” at the CGIAR Platform for Big Data in Agriculture Convention, in Nairobi, Kenya. The project, which won the 2017 CGIAR Inspire Challenge, is a collaboration between IFPRI and the Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience International (CABI). Kramer is a research fellow and Ceballos an associate research fellow in the Markets, Trade, and Institutions Division, and Kannan is a visiting fellow with the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation.

Tingju Zhu, with his coauthors, received the ENRE Best Publication – Natural Resources award, for his research paper “Hydroeconomic optimization of integrated water management and transfers under stochastic surface water supply,” published in Water Resources Research. This annual award, presented by the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), recognizes contributions in the field of Energy, Natural Resources, and the Environment (ENRE). The awards ceremony will take place in Phoenix, AZ on November 4, 2018. Zhu is a research fellow in the Environment and Production Technology Division.

Berber Kramer, with her coauthor, Francisco Ceballos, received the T.W. Shultz Prize for Best Contributed Paper for their paper on climate smart insurance in India at the 30th Annual International Conference of Agricultural Economists. Berber is a research fellow and an applied microeconomist in the Markets, Trade, and Institutions Division
 

Hiroyuki Takeshima, received the Nils Westermarck Prize for Best Poster, for his poster on mechanization in Nigeria at the 30th Annual International Conference of Agricultural Economists. Takeshima is a research fellow in the Development Strategy and Governance Division.
Anjani Kumar, Research Fellow is one of four recipients of the Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award for Outstanding Research in Agricultural Sciences, India. The award was presented by the Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare (UNI) Minister Radha Mohan Singh at the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) Awards ceremony. Kumar is a researcher in the South Asia Region office.

Xinshen Diao, Deputy Division Director and Senior Research Fellow has received the University of Minnesota’s 2018 Distinguished Leadership Award for Internationals that recognizes Diao’s outstanding achievements and scholarly work which have played a critical role in improving the lives of the world’s most underprivileged people. Diao is a researcher in the Development Strategy and Governance Division.

Senior Research Fellow, David Laborde at the 2018 Annual GTAP (Global Trade Analysis Project)  Meeting received the prestigious Alan Powell Award. The award is presented each year to one of the GTAP members in recognition of outstanding service. The award is in honor of one of the Founding Members of the Advisory Board, and the intellectual grandfather of GTAP – Alan A. Powell. David Laborde has been an important contributor to improving GTAP since the beginning of his professional career and this award is a recognition of the importance of his contributions. Laborde is a researcher in the Markets, Trade, and Institutions Division.

Senior Research Fellow and Head of Capacity Strengthening, Suresh Babu has been named Fellow of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) under the category of Pravasi Indian (Non-resident Indian). This position is in recognition of his contribution in research, capacity strengthening and policy communication. Babu is a researcher in the Director General’s Office.

Senior Research Analyst, Francisco Ceballos was awarded the 2017 Ernst Meyer Prize of The Geneva Association for his doctoral thesis on “Demand and Design Considerations for Smallholder Farmers’ Weather Index Insurance Products.” The Geneva Association awards the prestigious Ernst Meyer Prize annually for university research work in the form of a doctoral thesis which makes a significant and original contribution to the study of risk and insurance economics. Ceballos is a researcher in the Markets, Trades, and Institutions Division.

Senior Research Fellow Kristin Davis (coauthor) has been awarded Distinguished Article of 2017 by the Journal of International Agricultural and Extension Education. Davis is a researcher in the Development Strategy and Governance Division.
Xinshen Diao, Deputy Division Director and Senior Research Fellow has received the 2018 Outstanding Alumni Award from the University of Minnesota’s Department of Applied Economics for her research achievements and the impact of her scholarly work. She will be receiving this award on October 5, 2018. https://www.apec.umn.edu/about/awards-honors. Diao is a researcher in the Development Strategy and Governance Division.

 

Data Africa, an open source agriculture, climate, poverty, and health visualization engine led by HarvestChoice (and Senior Research Fellow Jawoo Koo and his team), won the 2018 Webby Award in the Government and Civil Innovation Category. Koo is a researcher in the Environment and Production Technology Division.

 

Tewodaj Mogues, Senior Research Fellow was competitively awarded entry into the FPI Fellowship Programme (Foreign Policy Interrupted). The FPI Fellowship provides opportunities for mid- to late-career women academics and professionals involved with international policy to strengthen the impact of their work on policy, through effective links with and outreach to media.
