Samuel Benin

Samuel Benin is the Acting Director for Africa in the Development Strategies and Governance Unit. He conducts research on national strategies and public investment for accelerating food systems transformation in Africa and provides analytical support to the African Union’s CAADP Biennial Review.

2022 Award Winners

Derek Headey, Senior research fellow in the Development Strategy and Governance Division is the recipient (along with co-authors) of the 2022 AAEA award for Quality of Communications for the paper, Cost and affordability of nutritious diets at retail prices: Evidence from 177 countries. in “Food Policy,”  The award specifically highlights the Our World in Data page that was set up partly as a result of the paper. “The Quality of Communication Award is granted to encourage excellence in publications in fields consistent with the AAEA vision statement. A maximum of two awards are given each year. Entries must demonstrate superior communication of concepts or knowledge in any subject matter of professional specialization (i.e., teaching, research, policy analysis or extension) in agricultural and applied economics as defined by the vision statement.” Considerations for the award are–importance of topic, timeliness of topic, value of communication to its intended audience, how it expands the reach or visibility of ag and applied economics to a broader set of stakeholders, its significance of contribution to the literature or other media, its organization and presentation of material, the economic content of communication. Anjani Kumar received the Indian Society of Agricultural Economics Fellow Award for Outstanding Contribution in the field of Agricultural Economics Research in the Award Ceremony held at Central Agricultural University, Imphal, Manipur, India.

Country program leader and research fellow Kibrom Abay (Development Strategy and Governance Division) who is posted in IFPRI-Egypt, is the recipient (with his co-authors) of the 2022 Best Paper Award (in the AAEA International Section).  The paper, Measurement error mechanisms matter: agricultural intensification with farmer misperceptions and misreporting was published by the American Journal of Agricultural Economics.

The International Section of the AAEA develops activities and programs that educate and inform AAEA members about the expanding and intertwining nature of global economics as it relates to food, natural resources, agriculture trade and development, policies, and politics.
