On October 6, 2016, IFPRI director general Dr. Shenggen Fan welcomed Dr. Wolfgang Jamann to IFPRI’s Washington headquarters. Dr. Jamann is Secretary General and CEO of Geneva-based CARE International Federation. During their meeting, the two leaders signed a partnership agreement on behalf of their respective organizations.

IFPRI and CARE complement each other well: IFPRI’s mission is to provide research-based policy solutions aimed at sustainably lowering poverty rates and ending hunger and malnutrition. CARE, meanwhile, focuses on increasing food and nutrition security and resilience to climate change and other shocks in vulnerable regions, with particular focus on women and girls, as part of its larger mission of reducing poverty and achieving social justice. During the ceremony, Dr. Fan noted CARE’s commitment to using data-driven knowledge in its efforts toward improving food and nutrition security and resilience. It is this commitment in part that makes CARE a natural partner for IFPRI. Dr. Jamann complemented IFPRI for launching the Compact 2025 initiative with the ambition to eradicate hunger in collaborative efforts, and committed CARE’s participation.

IFPRI and CARE have already been collaborating for more than a decade in order to realize their shared vision of a world free of poverty, hunger, and malnutrition. This formal agreement signals that IFPRI and CARE will move toward a more systematic partnership while continuing joint projects currently underway. By combining IFPRI’s superb research & policy capabilities with CARE’s on-the-ground network, implementation expertise, and policy advocacy engagement the two organizations will be better able to fill gaps in policy, practice, and knowledge with regard to building the resilience of vulnerable and poor populations, achieving food security, improving nutrition, promoting gender equality, and ending poverty.
