It is rapidly recognized that agriculture and nutrition problems are closely related to one another, but its relevance is not necessarily well incorporated into the food system. Adoption of nutritionally conscious agriculture (Nutrition Sensitive Agriculture) is an important step to change agriculture from the viewpoint of nutritional outcomes and is expected to be feasible even in small scale agriculture. Based on this awareness, this workshop will discuss newly emerging challenges on a global scale as we transform agriculture and food systems to improve income and nutrition.
The workshop consists of three parts: (1) nutrition and food security, (2) market-oriented agriculture and inclusive value chain construction, and (3) past research results. In Part 1, the workshop will look worldwide and clarify issues that are becoming increasingly global. In addition, JICA will guide “Food and Nutrition Africa Initiative (IFNA)” launched at the Sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VI) in 2016 as one approach Japan will address in this context. The second part of the workshop will examine a new approach aimed at transforming small scale agriculture. In addition, there will be presentations about the successful experience of SHEP led by JICA in Africa. In the final part of the workshop, findings will be discussed and suggestions from three studies dealing with agriculture and nutrition relationships on a global scale.
