Agriculture remains in neglect (The Daily Star)

June 30, 2019

Bangladesh’s Daily Star reported on the country’s shrinking public investment in the agricultural sector based on the proposed 2019-2020 budget. The article quoted Senior Research Fellow and Bangladesh Country Representative Akhter Ahmed explaining that the pace of poverty reduction is slowing because of falling agricultural growth, and that new investments are needed—especially in crop improvement R&D and agricultural extension. Ahmed also recommended price supports for farmers, noting that IFPRI plans to study the intervention. Ultimately, the article noted stagnant technology and climate change as some of the largest threats to agricultural production.
