The Nation (Malawi) published an article on COVID-19 lockdowns and what has been seen so far. According to IFPRI, the measures, which were effected in April, have reduced household incomes by an average of 11.4 percent. These measures have pushed the poverty rate by 5.8 percentage points to 56.3 percent from 50.5 percent. Research Analyst Rosemary Botha (IFPRI-Malawi) said that although urban households are the most affected income-wise, poverty rate has worsened in rural areas, “We expect an increase in poverty due to these changes in income levels.”
