Negotiators from Ukraine and Russia extended the Black Sea Grain Initiative, according to a story in Respekt. The article reported that among other consequences, a possible end to the grain deal would further push prices higher. The grain agreement was signed in July, and in the following months, Ukraine exported eleven million tons of agricultural crops. This was a huge increase compared to the first months of the war, when Odessa and other ports were blockaded by Russian warships as well as mines deployed by Ukraine to defend against a Russian landing. However, according to data from the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), even after the signing of the agreement, exports constituted only 50 percent of peacetime exports.
