Bob Baulch, senior research fellow, authored an op-ed in Malawi’s biggest national paper, The Nation. The article questioned the government’s latest maize export ban. Baulch argues that the ban will have detrimental effects in Malawi by denying local companies and farmers potential income, which also negatively impacts future harvest cycles. It goes on to explain the wider implications for the region as well as the ban’s direct impact on regional famine because it limits the access of food to nearby countries.
