The Nation Online (Malawi) published an article stating that an assessment by the Agriculture Policy Research Africa (Apra) showed the government’s failure to enforce the minimum farm-gate prices, has led to most traders not complying and eventual losses for farmers. According to the assessment report, done by Economist Stevier Kaiyatsa and others, the purchasing prices that traders use are below the official farm gate prices by about two-thirds. An IFPRI paper, Can a maize price ban work in Malawi? concluded that over the last 12 years, government intervention has been unable to lift estimated farmgate maize prices above the floor set by minimum farmgate prices.
