The human cost of the food and fuel crises | WBG-IMF 2022 annual meetings (World Bank Group)

October 10, 2022

World Bank Group produced a video panel discussion from the WBG-IMF 2022 Annual Meetings. Even before the war in Ukraine, food and energy prices and global hunger were already on the rise due to the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change impacts, and conflicts. The first half of 2022 has witnessed one of the largest shocks to global food and energy markets that the world has seen in decades. While most countries are impacted by these shocks, poor households face the highest burden. Managing Director, Systems Transformation, CGIAR, and Director General, IFPRI, Johan Swinnen discussed the role of research in guiding countries through a crisis response. He said, “The long-time strategy has to concentrate on resilience agenda, climate change, and productivity and dealing with food loss/food waste. The solutions include some technology and some part policy agenda. For example, we must look at fertilizer–trade, subsidies, and the technology issue. Room for improving management practices.”
