The IFPRI community is saddened by the passing of Dr. Wilberforce Kisamba Mugerwa, a Ugandan agricultural economist, politician, and academic, on January 7, 2021.
Mugerwa was the director of IFPRI’s International Service for National Agricultural Research (ISNAR) Division from 2004 to 2006, in which he was responsible for overall guidance on research and capacity strengthening in the national agricultural systems in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Prior to joining IFPRI, he was a Member of Parliament and served in several different cabinet minister positions for the government of Uganda. At the time of his death, he was the Chancellor of Ndejje University and chairman of the National Planning Authority of Uganda (NPA).
He held a doctorate in agricultural economics and had a strong background in research, with a particular interest in the management of natural resources for sustainable use and food security.
IFPRI joins the international development world, his current and former colleagues, the students he helped educate, as well as his family and friends in expressing our sense of loss.
