Samuel Benin

Samuel Benin is the Acting Director for Africa in the Development Strategies and Governance Unit. He conducts research on national strategies and public investment for accelerating food systems transformation in Africa and provides analytical support to the African Union’s CAADP Biennial Review.

Trade restrictions are the wrong way to address food supply issues in the COVID-19 crisis (The Hill)

The Hill (USA) published an opinion piece by Senior Research Fellow Joseph Glauber on how the COVID-19 pandemic has caused many disruptions in the food distribution systems, ranging from health issues in meat and other food processing plants to impacts of lockdown procedures that have disrupted food chain flows. He writes, “While the impacts of trade restrictions may bring short-term benefits to some groups, they are far outweighed by the long-term costs and even by adverse short-run impacts.”
