Tropentag 2023 conference highlights equitable food systems transformation

September 08, 2023

Washington, DC, USA – The annual Tropentag conference, a premier interdisciplinary event focusing on tropical and subtropical agriculture, natural resource management, and rural development, will take place from September 20 to September 22, 2023, in Berlin, Germany. Co-organized by The Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, this year’s conference centers around the theme “Competing Pathways for Equitable Food Systems Transformation: Trade-offs and Synergies.”

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) is honored to participate in Tropentag 2023 as the CGIAR Center of focus.

The program features an impressive representation of CGIAR researchers and includes two CGIAR-led sessions: “Advancing a Demand-Driven Research Portfolio to Improve Water, Land and Food Systems in the Global South” (September 20) organized by CGIAR’s Systems Transformation Science Group, and “Payments for Ecosystem Services: Win-Win Solutions?” (September 21) which is part of a BMZ-supported seminar series on Strengthening Food Systems Resilience.

Johan Swinnen, Director General of IFPRI and Managing Director of the CGIAR Systems Transformation Science Group, will deliver a keynote address, underscoring the pivotal role of research in driving equitable food systems transformation.

“IFPRI is delighted to be featured at Tropentag 2023, a testament to our longstanding commitment to advancing agricultural and food policy research as well as our strong linkages with German universities and partners,” said Swinnen. “Tropentag 2023 focuses on equitable food systems transformation, and we are pleased to contribute some of the transdisciplinary research being undertaken by the CGIAR Systems Transformation Science Group on this important topic.”

Stefan Sieber, Head of the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) Department on Sustainable Land Use in Developing Countries, and Dagmar Mithöfer, Head of the Agrifood Chain Management Group at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, said: “ZALF and Humboldt-Univeristät are delighted to organize the 2023 Tropentag, since this conference convenes one of the biggest global networks on tropical and subtropical agriculture. The topic is derived from the UN Food System Summit 2021, and we will be exploring the importance of a strong evidence base to support the formulation of policy options at the local, national, and international level.  It is critical to have science inform the possible policy options for a more sustainable food systems transformation”.

The Tropentag conference has a rich history of fostering international collaboration and knowledge exchange. This year’s hybrid event format will combine both virtual and on-site participation, allowing experts, researchers, policymakers, and wider audiences from around the world to engage in insightful discussions.  More than 1,000 participants from more than 85 countries will be joining Tropentag.
