War and hunger: Ukraine crisis and food insecurity in Asia (Bulatlat)

March 21, 2022

Bulatlat (Philippines) published an article on the Ukraine-Russia war and how it will affect the global food supply. It is not only crops and oils that are affected, but also fertilizer. Aside from being a significant food supplier, Russia is also a leading fertilizer producer globally. It accounts for 15 percent of global trade in nitrogenous fertilizers and 17 percent of global potash fertilizer exports, according to IFPRI (see blog post, How will Russia’s invasion of Ukraine affect global food security?). Additionally, Belarus, Russia’s ally and a staging ground of its military operations in Ukraine, supplies 16 percent of the global demand for potash. Belarus’s potash exports are already reeling from US sanctions even before the Ukraine conflict.
