Large IFPRI presence at the ICAE & South Asia launch of the 2024 GFPR on Food Systems for Healthy Diets and Nutrition

In August, IFPRI co-organized two major events in South Asia: the 32nd International Conference of Agricultural Economists in New Delhi, India, and the regional launch of the 2024 Global Food Policy Report (GFPR) in Kathmandu, Nepal.

The 32nd International Conference of Agricultural Economists (ICAE), titled “Transformation Towards Sustainable Agri-Food Systems” (August 2–7, 2024), brought together around 1,000 delegates from universities and research institutions and was honored by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a curtain raiser event. More than 60 researchers represented IFPRI in multiple sessions. Learn more about IFPRI engagement at ICAE 2024.

The South Asia Launch of 2024 GFPR in Nepal (August 8–9, 2024) included presentations on the Report’s key findings and recommendations with a focus on healthy sustainable diets and nutrition in South Asia. See the launch event recording on our website.

Estimating the cost and affordability of healthy diets: How much do methods matter? Recently developed cost and affordability of healthy diet (CoAHD) metrics have quickly become mainstream food security indicators. However, published research on the sensitivity of estimation methods is limited. This study by Derek Headey, Kalle Hirvonen, and Harold Alderman focuses on two important innovations in CoAHD measurement at the global level. (Read article in Food Policy)

Higher wheat prices push Egypt to increase price of subsidized bread for first time since 1989

High consumption of baladi bread makes wheat an essential crop for the Egyptian diet, as in most countries in the Middle East and North Africa. While Egyptian per capita wheat consumption has declined in recent years, wheat still accounts for about 35% of total daily calories.

Nina Jovanovic and Joseph Glauber examine how the Egyptian food subsidy program has been affected by changes in wheat imports due to the Russia-Ukraine war and persistently high domestic wheat prices due to the weakening of the Egyptian pound.

Pathways to women’s voice and agency in Odisha
IFPRI researchers recently developed a short video telling the stories of women in Odisha State, India, who were able to exercise their voice and obtain assets to improve their livelihoods within the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee (MGNREGA) program, the largest workfare program in the world. Their stories show that there is no single pathway to success.

Also see the full version of the video and the blog describing how the film was created, and read the recent IFPRI Discussion Paper “Claim-making under India’s Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA): Barriers and opportunities for women’s voice and agency over asset selection” by Katrina Kosec, Jordan Kyle, Sudha Narayanan, Kalyani Raghunathan, and Soumyajit Ray. The authors have also just published this essay in The India Forum: “Staking Claim to Entitlements under MGNREGA. How Can Women Make Their Demands?”
