IFPRI will support UNICEF, WFP, and WHO in global efforts to improve nutrition for children and women in humanitarian crises

Malnutrition remains a critical threat to millions of children and women in crisis-affected areas worldwide. In humanitarian contexts, where food insecurity and malnutrition are rampant, the risk of wasting in childhood is particularly high, leading to increased child mortality and often irreversible growth and development consequences.

UNICEF, WFP, and WHO are leveraging their unique mandates to launch a joint effort for research and action to support the prevention, detection, and management of child wasting in humanitarian contexts. This work will guide national governments in implementing scalable approaches to preventing wasting in crisis-affected areas and make a substantial impact on the lives of millions of children and women. The partnership includes the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) as the global research partner.

“IFPRI is pleased to work with our partners at UNICEF, WFP, and WHO on this hugely important collaborative initiative to build evidence and program experience on how to address still unacceptably high levels of child wasting,” said Dr. Purnima Menon, Senior Director, Food and Nutrition Policy, IFPRI.

Compliance with food safety measures and their economic impact on smallholder dairy farmers: This article co-authored by Anjani Kumar, Kriti Sharma, and colleagues examines the adoption and economic impact of compliance with food safety measures (FSM) using cross-sectional farm-level data from three key Indian states in the Indo-Gangetic Plains. The study found that compliance of FSM contributes to economic benefits for dairy farmers. (Read the article in the Journal of Cleaner Production)

Food systems transformation is especially critical in countries like Niger, given their vulnerability to poverty, widespread food insecurity and malnutrition, and climate change. A new policy brief by John Ulimwengu and Nadine Gbossa combines the results of a food system mapping exercise with an analysis of financial flows into Niger’s food system from 2019 to 2022.

India lifts export restrictions on rice

Over the past two months, India has removed several of its restrictions affecting rice exports, some in place since September 2022. This is welcome news for rice importing countries, which for the past year have had to seek alternative suppliers at significantly elevated prices.

Rice prices, as measured by the Thai white rice price (5% broken) in this chart, averaged $615 per metric ton from July 27, 2023 to September 29, 2024, the period during which the bulk of the export restrictions were in place. This was an increase of about 20% over levels just prior to the announcement of the restrictions. With the recent rollbacks, rice prices on global markets have fallen back sharply to pre-restriction levels.

Joseph Glauber and Abdullah Mamun summarize recent actions, examine recent trade trends, and evaluate the impact of the restrictions on importing countries of Africa, a region that typically receives over half of India’s rice exports.
