Observatorio Detrabajadore published an article on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the agri-food sector in Venezuela. The pandemic has revealed an inequality in that almost a third of total mortality at the regional level is due to non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer (lethal risk conditions before the Covid-19) due to aging, globalization, urbanization and the increase in obesity and physical inactivity. In addition, one in four adults is obese and being overweight affecting 7.3% (3.9 million) of children under 5 years of age, a figure that exceeds the world average of 5.6%. Division Director Rob Vos (Markets, Trades, and Institutions) said, “If people only consume this type of food [wheat, rice, and corn], the risk of suffering adverse health consequences increases, as well as that of presenting symptoms in case of Covid-19 infection.”
