Samuel Benin

Samuel Benin is the Acting Director for Africa in the Development Strategies and Governance Unit. He conducts research on national strategies and public investment for accelerating food systems transformation in Africa and provides analytical support to the African Union’s CAADP Biennial Review.

Bio

Yanyan Liu is a Senior Research Fellow in the Markets, Trade, and Institutions Unit. Yanyan’s research has focused on program impact evaluation, microfinance, microinsurance, and economic transformation. Her work has been published in journals such as Economic Journal, European Economic Review, Journal of Applied Econometrics, Journal of Risk and Insurance, American Journal of Agricultural Economics, World Bank Economic Review, and World Development.

Prior to joining IFPRI in 2009, Yanyan worked for RTI International and for the Development Research Group at the World Bank. She received a joint PhD in Economics and Agricultural Economics from Michigan State University.

Information, mobile communication, and referral effects

This paper uses the universe of cellphone records from a Chinese telecommunication provider for a northern Chinese city to examine the role of information exchange in urban labor markets. We provide the first direct evidence of increased communication among referral pairs around job changes. Information provided by social contacts mitigates information asymmetry and improves labor market performance. (JEL D82, J62, O18, P23, P25, R23, Z13)

Group lending with peer selection and moral hazard

The theory on group lending suggests that joint liability induces borrowers to form homogeneous groups based on their risk types, which alleviates adverse selection and contributes to the success of microcredit schemes. We extend this theory by allowing individuals to differ both in their exogenous risk type and in their endogenous effort level. We find that joint liability leads to positive assortative matching in both a non-cooperative and cooperative game setting. Groups of safe borrowers additionally exhibit higher effort levels, which reinforces their likelihood of repayment as opposed to risky groups.
