Kalyani Raghunathan

Kalyani Raghunathan is Research Fellow in the Poverty, Gender, and Inclusion Unit, based in New Delhi, India. Her research lies at the intersection of agriculture, gender, social protection, and public health and nutrition, with a specific focus on South Asia and Africa.

IFPRI Researchers Distinguished with Numerous Awards at International Conference of Agricultural Economists

August 3, 2018, Washington, D.C. – Several IFPRI researchers were recognized with prestigious awards at the 30th International Conference for Agricultural Economists this week. Research Fellow Berber Kramer and received the T.W. Shultz Prize for Best Contributed Paper for her paper, co-authored with Associate Research Fellow Francisco Ceballos, on climate smart insurance in India ; and Research Fellow Hiroyuki Takeshima received the Nils Westermarck Prize for Best Poster, for his poster on mechanization in Nigeria.

 

“We are extremely proud that our IFPRI colleagues have been recognized by our peers with these awards and congratulate them on this distinction,” said Shenggen Fan, Director General of IFPRI.

More than 60 IFPRI staff attended the conference, with IFPRI providing significant financial support to bring young researchers from developing countries to the conference.

 

Fan was also recognized at the conference as an “Honorary Life Member” of the International Association of Agricultural Economists (IAAE) at the conference, the highest distinction granted by the organizing body of the ICAE. Kym Anderson, former IFPRI board chair, was also recognized as an “Honorary Life Member” at the conference. 

 

In addition to those who won awards, several other IFPRI researchers were also nominated for awards at ICAE. Caitlin Herrington, Jose Funes, Keith Lividini, Mourad Moursi, Victor Taleon, Dorene Asare-Marfo, and Ekin Birol of Harvest Plus were jointly nominated for the Nils Westermarck Prize for Best Poster, as was Associate Research Fellow Dennis Ochieng. Tewodaj Mogues and Bjorn van Campenhout were also nominated Uma Lele Prize for Best Contributed Paper on Gender.

 

The ICAE is the flagship conference of the IAAE, and is held every three years, attracting approximately 1,000 researchers from across the globe. The conference was held in Vancouver Canada, from July 28 to August 2.

 

IFPRI Senior Research Fellow Will Martin provided the official opening and closing of the conference, as President of the IAAE, including special remarks on economic convergence and agricultural economics.

 

PK Joshi, director of IFPRI’s South Asia Region, also provided a special invited presentation during the closing ceremony to acknowledge the next ICAE meetings to be held in Delhi in 2021.
